Energy baseline
Without a reference line, "we consumed less this year" is not a result: it is a sentence that depends on how much you made and what kind of winter it was.

How it works
One reference, written once
A month of absolute consumption says almost nothing. A department consuming ten per cent less may have run twenty per cent less, in which case it got worse.
Decide what explains the consumption
It is almost never time. It is pieces produced, running hours, degree days, cubic metres treated. The explanatory variables are declared with the formula, and they are the part to settle with whoever knows the plant.
Fix a reference period
Long enough to contain the seasonality, recent enough to resemble today. What comes out is a relationship between consumption and variables, not a single number.
Every comparison is normalised
Actual consumption is compared with what was expected under the same conditions. That difference is the only quantity worth attributing to a decision, a fault or an intervention.
Revise it when the plant changes
A new line or a product change moves the reference. The revision is explicit and dated: knowing when the yardstick changed is part of the yardstick.
